  1. He can change his name to yours if he hasn't already done so. But he is too old for adoption. As he is over 18 he doesn't need his biological fathers permission no more to change his name.

  2. Adoption is a legal process.  If both of you want the legal benefits (assuming he calls you Dad already) he should change his surname by deed of poll (your Council's registration of births and deaths office) to yours and you must name him as a beneficiary on your will or life insurance policy, etc.  It's not quiet the same as adoption but he is past the point, ie 18 where you would need to have parental responsibility granted in law (the act of adoption.)

    Good luck!

  3. No - Uk you have to be under 18.  I suggest he changes his name by deed poll so your surname is double barrelled with his and make sure you do a will - now - and leave him a hefty chunk of whatever you have mentioning that he is a much loved stepson who you have always wished were your natural son.

  4. hiya i found this I'm not sure where you are but it sounded quite good and relevant http://adoption.about.com/od/typesofadop...

it sounds silly that you cant adopt him because of his age its such a shame, if you haven't already i wonder weather it would be worth speaking to a solicitor.

I'm sure whatever happens he See's you as his dad anyways because as that's what you are.

  5. im really not sure, but it sounds like you have a good relationship with him, you dont need a piece of paper saying you are his father, if he feels that you are, and you love him as your own that should be enough

  6. not sure about all states but in wisconsin you can. I totally understand why you want to do this. it may only be a piece of paper but that paper would mean alot to you and him.

  7. If it so his name can be changed then that can be done through deed poll.

  8. One of my closest friends and her siblings were adopted as adults.  She was nearly 30 years old when this happened.  It was actually easier for them as adults because the termination of biological parental rights was their choice rather than that of the bio father.

If you are in the US It can be done.  Speak with an adoption attorney.

  9. If the person you want to adopt is over 18 (which he is) then you just need him to give you permission. It does not matter what age...unless the child is under 18 and then the biological parents rights need to be terminated or signed over to you. Since he is 23.....he can sign the papers himself.

I think you need to find someone else to speak to about this, that knows what they are talking for.

I work for the state that I live in under foster care/adoption and if a child is over the age....then you just need to find an attorney to draw up the papers.

    Good Luck!!
