I have to write a letter of recommendation for my sisters adoption and I don't even know where to start. Does anyone have any examples or any advice? I would really appreciate it.

  1. You want to talk about her experience with children, the stability of her marriage, and her motivation to adopt. You might want to find out what she said when asked these things so she doesn't get caught up in any lies.

If you have kids, talk about how great she is with them, how she offers to watch them for you, how she loves spending time with them... talk about how long she's been married, if they dated for years before marriage, mention that... if it was a quick dating period, don't bring it up... talk about how they go to church, if they do, and if they were married in the church... religion is great in a letter like this... if the church has strong value on raising children and families it is a good thing to mention... etc

  2. Did she help raise you? Mention that. Does she give you guidence/help? Mention that. Have you seen her interact with children (Yours, etc).. Is She compassionate? Educated? Smart? Talents she should share with children? Religious? (Don't be over zealous with that one)

Do you think she'd be a horrible mom? Don't write the letter.

  3. Write the truth about your sister and let them decide if what and how you wrote it will affect their decisions. This is about a child's future and not an essay for your English class that your trying to get a good grade on.

I personally think they should just interview everyone that an adoptive parent comes into contact with (work, etc.) to get the most honest answers.

  4. Just be honest.  Don't make it look like an employment recommendation, " He is a trustworthy person that will remain loyal..."  I suggest terms such as "Great around children", "Patient", "motherly/fatherly", etc.

  5. I'm a birthmom and what i looked for was a couple in a good stable relationship and could take care of my daugther. Let them know how your sister and husband met how they feel in love. Explain why you think they would be good parents and how giving them the green light it would make such a happy home not only for the child but for them as well. Like for example my daugthers a mom and a dad wrote letters on why they choose the avenue they did and why they couldnt have children (she had cancer) and i wanted to give my gurl to people who couldnt have children of there own and i really like them and it all worked out in the end to. Not the greatest example i know just letting you know things i looked for. good luck
