Adoption of granddaughter?

I was told by ssi that I could draw ssi for my granddaughter after the adoption even though my husband died 1 year ago .. now today I went back today to find out how much I can make a year and now they say I might not be able to draw...does anyone out there know ?? one said yes and one said no.. we have had her one year before my husband died but hadn't adopted her yet...

  1. You really need to call social security and ask them.

    In my case, my birth father was killed and I got a survivor benefit check. After my grandparents adopted me, I still got the check. However that was in 1974 lol.

    Call social security, good luck with your grand daughter.


  2. I doubt you could draw for her off of your husbands and she was not adopted before his death. But if or when you are of age or are disabled you should be able too off of yours. But I am not positive.

  3. As a grandparent who adopted grandchildren, I believe SS benefits can only come if one or the other adoptive parent is on SS . At least that is how it is with us. My husband is retired and on SS/retirement then 4 years ago we finalized our adoption after 7 years of custody. Then we applied for and received SS benefits for each child.

  5. idk but I do know it is often very helpful to have a social worker help you negotiate thru the red tape and the conflicting answers you get.

  6. Try asking someone down at the nearst Social Security office.
