  1. It is really dependent on the type of adoption you choose - international, domestic, private, foster/adopt, etc.  I would recommend contacting a local adoption agency to discuss the options available to you.  They will best be able to discuss the fees with you and what they are for.

For us, our adoption was rather unique in that we were going to proceed with a private adoption and then due to personal reasons, we found an adoption agency to do an "identified" adoption for us so that we could insure all of the paperwork was completed properly.  Our adoption ran somewhere in the range of $12K- $15K, but that included some additional things for us because our son was born with special needs.  We have friends that just went through an international adoption and they spent closer to $35K.  Foster/Adopt can be significantly less.  So I certainly recommend contacting an agency for more information.

    Good luck.

  2. Adopting from the U.S. foster care system is generally the least expensive type of adoption, usually involving little or no cost, and states often provide subsidies to adoptive parents. Stepparent and kinship adoptions are often not very costly. Agency and private adoptions can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more depending on a variety of factors including services provided, travel expenses, birthmother expenses, requirements in the state, and other factors. International adoptions can range from $7,000 to $30,000.

While there may be a small fee required up front, any requirement that all fees be paid immediately following application should raise red flags. When talking with your professional, ask about the payment schedule, and about sliding scale fees if your financial resources are limited.
