We are trying to narrow down our list of references for adoption and would like to know what type of questions they are asked. This will help us narrow down the list to those that would benefit in the discussion.

  1. How long have you known "Mr and Mrs Smith"

Do you think they would be good parents

Have you seen them parent children

Have you seen them discipline children

    etc...pretty simple

  2. Mine were asked several things, like did I have the patience, would I love the kids like my own, did I have the financial planning to raise them, and more.  There's no way for sure of knowing, because each social worker could ask different questions, some easy, some hard.

I'd go with someone you've known for a while, someone who can communicate well, and who understands the dynamics of being parents.  They're looking more for honesty, not a reference to run for president.  I would go with someone who's background doesn't include abuse or any criminal records.

  3. They will ask them how long they have known you, how you handle issues and challenges independently and as a couple, what you like to do. They will ask if the reference thinks you will make good parents. They will ask if you have any personal problems that could prevent you from being a strong parent. Again, the interviews will focus on any weaknesses or concerns that come up in your paperwork. But the reference interviews are usually fairly simple and straightforward because you're not going to suggest people who will not speak highly of you, are you? ; )

  4. Our adoption was final last week. They asked our references how long they've known us have they seen us interact with the child, did they feel we would be good parents, what kind of character did we have, did they know how we would discipline and just basic questions if we would give the child a good home and then would they recommend us as adoptive parents

  5. my Brother is adopted i can remember that they asked references everything from personalitites of the persons as well as tempers and how well they felt my parents handled anger and diversity,if they ever saw them in public situations and in home settings were they hard workers and or work records

Good Luck I hope this helps
