Question:

Adoption reform information?

My husband's best friend is asking questions about adoption reform. He's totally flabbergasted that adoptees don't have access to their own records. I'm pretty new to all this myself, and I don't know that I gave him a good explanation of the issues. Can you guys give me some links to share with him that will explain it better than I can?

BTW, this was in response to a petition I sent out...I don't remember which one it was. He (like most of the general population) had no idea.

Thank you in advance!

  1. Great question and feedback.  I too am like your husbands best friend.  This is a great place with great people to lead him.  It also lets people know that post informative information that its worth all the negative feedback they sometimes get because the more people know and understand what is happening to adult adoptee's civil rights the better chance reform has in all state legislatures.  I personally found b*****d Nation to be the most thorough site.

Just wanted to say kudo's to your friend!

  2. Yikes where to start, because there's so much that needs reform.

Ed C. is right to start with b*****d Nation when it comes to sealed birth certificates.

For other areas of reform, he could:

-Read NCFA - Mothers, Marketing and Madness to get an idea of how the NCFA uses your tax dollars to keep records shut and promote adoption to young women who would be perfectly able to parent

-Read The Baby Thief to get an idea of the woman whose baby stealing and blackmailing played heavily into sealing records

-Read Wake Up Little Suzie to get an idea of race and economics during the BSE, which laid the foundation for the way adoption is practiced today

    - Read The Adoption Tax Credit: An Ethical Dilemma by Joe Kroll, Executive Director of the North American Council on Adoptable Children

    - Read Big Business In Babies: Adoption, The Child Commodities Market

And then ask him to join us in New Orleans!!!
