  1. There is, in fact, an adoption tax credit. You can claim up to 10,000 (and a little bit more) on your taxes and you get a credit for that amount charged against what you owe in taxes.

This is not a deduction, which just lowers your taxable income. Rather this is a credit for the full amount you are claiming.

You have to fall into what the guidelines consider a "middle class" income, however it's fairly broad these days, so most people qualify.

Oh, and to the answerer who said you should just be glad you have your daughter, and you're not buying her, etc, etc. - I never heard that applied to people who claim insurance coverage when they give birth to their baby in a hospital!!! They are always glad that the insurance covers whatever costs it can. This is a similar situation, only it's not covered by health insurance!!!

  2. http://www.ncdhhs.gov/dss/adopt/searchin...

There are numbers there you can contact.  Also, when you file your taxes this year go to HR block and let them do it, as some expenses are tax deductible.

  3. The Federal Income Tax has a procedure for applying for a tax credit. A credit is an actual reduction of your federal income taxes, not just a deduction. I believe the current limit of the credit is $10,800, which is way more than you have spent so far.

Make sure you save all your receipts for the adoption of the child. The IRS web site explains what you can count as a legitimate expense. It is called Topic 607 - Adoption Credit

I am listing the web address below. This would be worth a trip to a good tax accountant to make sure you do this right.

Treasure that little girl, as I am sure you will.

  4. It sounds like your attorney is drawing it out a lot longer than necessary just to get more money out of you.  What in the world could take $4000 if the other birth parent is relinquishing parental rights!?!  Ask your tax person.  It very well be considered some type of deduction.  Who knows.  Good luck.

  5. There is an adoption credit on form 1040 federal taxes. I am unsure if there is an age limit or if it only applies to infants, but you can check into it. You will also be able to claim her as a dependent. Other than that enjoy your newly adopted daughter.

  6. This is like me asking for getting money back for the cost of my wedding, or for the birth of my children

How come when it comes to adoption people don't want to pay their own way - it doesn't make any sense to me

  7. You will be able to get a tax credit of almost 10,000 on your income taxes to cover the adoption costs.

Some states offer additional benefits and credits for adoptions, especially of older children, but usually only for adoptions through fostercare.  However, it is worth checking into (in my state, some privately adopted kids can still qualify for benefits like reduced college costs).

  8. Why would you get the money back?  Do you get money back after paying a hospital for a delivery?  You paid for the professional services to adopt, and you adopted.  No reimbursement for doing the right thing.

  9. Call a tax professional and ask their advice. There is a lot you can claim on your taxes for adoption costs depending on your age.

  10. I don't know I think some of the tax money should go pay for the medical bills to have the child instead of the tax payers paying for them.  I know the couple who took my grandson payed 4,000 dollars for him and my son has payed to much to count to lawyers to fight to get him back.

He can't claim that on his taxes.I don't beleive any one should get a tax break this would make the cost of adoptions go down.It cost to have a child either being the birth mother or adopted mother. And Do you all feel the birth mother should get to claim on her taxes the 9 months she carryed the baby? This is why there are so many baby selling agencies around.

  11. if you love this child like she were your own enough to adopt her then money shouldn't matter right?  Its like saying that your daughter has a price tag on her head which she doesn't.

The money you are spending is goin towards you adopting her so leave it at that.

  12. Not when it is a family member.

  13. There is a tax credit, however, it is not applicable for the adoption of a stepchild.  Sorry for the bad news regarding finances, but congrat's on your daughter.
