  1. Honestly, China is one of the least expensive countries to adopt from, has the most reliable program, has a good reputation, and if I must say so, the cutest kids.  Plus one thing you have with China adoption is that it's FINAL.  No judge to tell you in 3 years, "oh the bio mom lied so we're taking back your child, and she's sorry" or that the bio mom won't release the kids, even though she is too high on Meth to realize what is going on.  I would adopt more kids if I had the funds.  Oh, and none of my kids were adopted as babies, but ages 2, 3 and 8, all were "special needs".

  2. Well, you are right that many people adopt from China.  It is a big international adoption program with many available children who need homes.  Japan, on the other hand, only allows adoptions to those with Japanese ancestry.  Plus, there are not the social problems and poverty in Japan that lead to a need for international adoptions.  So, very few international adoptions are from Japan.  A lot of people do adopt from Russia.  It is one of the countries where the most international adoptions happen:  I believe right now that it is 3rd, behind China and Guatemala.  Germany does not have an international adoption program so U.S. citizens cannot adopt from Germany.  Again, Germany is a country without the poverty and social problems that lead to a need for international adoption.

  3. Main reason we chose China is two fold. We were tald we had a better chance of getting a healthy baby between 6 and 12 months old (nd we did) and we only had to travel internationally once. I would not have been able to go to Russia ad meet the child and have to leve her for a couple of months before adopting her. It would hve torn my heart out.

  4. You can't adopt from Japan (at least in the US) or Germany.

I personally feel that it is not our place to ask people why they are adopting from whatever country.  Adoption is a way to build a family.  Only the people in the family know what will work best for them.

China's adoption procedure is pretty straight forward, and though it entails a lot of waiting right now, there is a good chance that whoever sets out to adopt from China (if they qualify to adopt from there) will eventually come home with a child from China.

I think Russia has had some problems with the program, and that makes it not an ideal program right now.

  5. People take advantage of others misfortunes

It's not simply the one-child policy that makes a chinese mother 'abandon' her baby.   Did you also know that there are heavy fines for parents who do not  have a 'birth licence'  or fines if you have more than one child?  People who can pay are just fine but alot of people are just too poor to pay and often give birth in hiding so as not to be caught without the licence.   They are forced to abandon or sell their children by a system that leaves them very little choice

I would love for western folk to pay the fines and licence fees for the poor rather than help continue the cycle of human rights abuses.

As long as there are western adopters and/or people willing to buy the children very little will change in China.

The policies will remain in force until 2010 by which time I hope that China will be realizing the social problems caused by it's policies and we will see changes

  6. there are forced abortions in china because of overpopulation so many choose to adopt from there. I knew a couple who adopted from gautemala and they had 3 kids from there if I were to adopt I'd probably adopt from a south american country

  7. china has more children waiting for adoption. also there are many agencies that do adoptions from china. it's harder to find adoption agencies that do adoptions from some of the other countries you mentioned. actually, only german citizens can adopt kids from germany. additionally, some countries that were formally part of the USSR have remnants from the nuclear power plants so some of the kids aren't as healthy.

  8. Adoptions from China are very predictable.  The time line is about a year, and the process is consistent.  The parents know what to expect from a Chinese adoption, and there are always plenty of babies available due to the one child policy and preference for males.  (If a woman gives birth to a girl, she may give it up in hopes she will have a boy later, or if she gets pregnant a 2nd time, or if she is single, etc.)

It's also the 'cool' country to adopt from.  If one parent has a good experience adopting from a certain country, other parents will often take their advice and adopt from the same country, spreading the trend.

The babies that are adopted out in China are generally very healthy because the mothers are generally on healthy diets, do not do drugs and do not drink.  (A common problem with adopting from Russia, for instance, is fetal alcohol syndrome.)  Plus, in many other countries, either adoption is not allowed, is more expensive, or more time-consuming (some countries require 6+ week stays).
