I am under 20 years old at the moment have not met a single woman who would enjoy dating me and as I get older I have come to be realistic and I just rather not wait for anyone and what I have really always wanted is a family of my own. I am currently a college student going to med school soon and am thinking of adopting after I get my practice settled. Is it more difficult for sing males to adopt newborns? How do you go about this process

  1. Under 20 and going to med school soon . . . well, finish your bachelor's degree first, get accepted to medical school, finish that and then think about adopting.  You will most likely find someone special by then because that's at least 5-6 years from now.

  2. Hi - You're under 20? You still have aLOT of time to find a wife and have a family.  And if you're going to be a physician, you shouldn't have any problem finding a good wife....

However, I did notice that you said you want to adopt after you get your practice settled. With medical school, and residency that's still at least 10-11 years away.  Even then, you'd still only be in your early 30's and have plenty of time to meet someone.

If by age 37 or so, you still haven't found someone but want to adopt, then you could look into adopting through the foster care system.  They will allow single males (or at least they did when I was a CPS caseworker 6 years ago) to foster and eventually adopt children/toddlers.

I think you should just focus on your career, perhaps do a little volunteer work on the side - who knows - maybe you could find Ms. Right along the way.  Perhaps look into volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters -

They would be THRILLED to have you as a big brother - TRUST me  - they need good men to be role models for younger children.  If there is a group home for abused/neglected children near where you live (there should be if you live in a city with a medical school) - you could also volunteer there and mentor youth.

Those are just my thoughts :) Good luck!

  3. It is quite difficult.  Babies and children are placed in homes most suitable for them, paticulary newborns which are in great demand and are most often placed with married couples.

Some adoption agencies insist on a couple being married, or a single woman.  But I have known of a single man adopting an older male child (I don't think a single male is allowed to adopt a girl.)

It might be worth you looking into it internationally, but I think the same rules may apply.  How about a surrogate mother?  You can use your sperm and have a surrogate mother carry your baby, then hand over all rights and parentage to you after the birth.

  4. adopt a cat

  5. I think that at your age and stage of life, you just need to focus on going to school and not worry about starting a family right now.
