Adrain Peterson and the #2 Pick?

Someone better convince me why I should take this guy at #2... the guy finished with 1,341 rush yards and 13 TDs last year.. however he had 520 of those yards and 6 TDs in 2 games.. if you take those away he has 820 Rushing yards and 7 TDs in 13 games played (missed 2 for injury).. quite frankly that should be a mid-to late 1st round selection

  1. 1) He is the most talented RB in the game (LT only exc.)

    2) Has one of the best O-line in the game

    3) Plays in one of the worst divisions in the league

  2. Hi Alex,

I agree and currently have AP slotted at #3 among all RBs.  Peterson has a couple things working against him:

    1.  As you stated, his numbers are inflated based on 2 huge games which (I believe) were anomalies in the NFL.

    2.  He loses significant carries to Chester Taylor (around 147 last year, I believe).  It hard to be elite when you're losing that many carries.

Like I said I actually have Westbrook ahead of AP in my rankings, but have AP ranked at #3 on the chance the he is awarded more carries this year.  Most people are hyping AP because of the sensation value.  He was a rookie who out performed many veterans, had some record-breaking games, and is a good-looking kid playing behind a great offensive line.  But you're right, I think its mostly hype and I definitely wouldn't pick him before LT or Westbrook.

If you want to see my full RB rankings, check out the link in my source list.  On my site you can also create your own RB rankings using drag and drop on an interactive, web-based cheat sheet, then generate a printable cheat sheet to take to your fantasy draft.  It's free.

  3. Quite frankly, it is possible that he will have 4 or 5 games this season near 200 yards. He is the best running back in the open field in the NFL. He will get 1600-1800 yards at a minimum. You will regret it if you do not pick him.

  4. What you all are forgetting is Peterson has no quarterback to speak of, and that allows defenses to stack 8 and 9 guys in the box to slow Peterson down.

I personally feel that Jackson will have a monster year and he is my number 2 rated back..

  5. yeah, but he's going to be running strong out of the box this year.  Plus, u can't take those 2 games away, because listen, he's going to have 2 games like that again this year, cause they're gonna play a couple scrub teams with no run Defense. I would expect another 2-3 200 yard games from this guy again next year. Right now, he's the elite back in the league. I'd take him at number 1.

  6. You are wise to be suspicious.

He's the "consensus" #2 by reputation more than merit.

He has tremendous upside, but is also a major injury risk.

You can look at the Chester Taylor platoon situation one of two ways:

    1) It spares AP from too many carries, and keeps him fresh and more likely to rack up stats.

    2) Taylor is a vulture, and takes cheese.  AP is not a true 'feature' back.

His injury history from college on scares me.

If you have the #2 pick, you are in perfect position to put that pick up for bid.  You could easily move back a couple of slots and still take a gem like Addai.  Someone will overpay to take your slot.

Pound for pound, based on real world performance and consistency, Westbrook is a better choice.

I sit in the camp that takes risks later in the draft, not in the early rounds.

  7. i'd agree with you, but that was last year

he was a rookie, he wasn't supposed to put up those numbers

now that childress knows is potential, he's going to use him more chester becomes either trade bait or a third down back  plus, your taking games put of his stats

if your talking fantasy, your gonna want those in, cause that's forty to fifty points in my league, and that's a s**t load of points

  8. I'll tell you why you should not pick him. He hasn't played a full season since his senior year in high school  and he hasn't changed his running style, Bottom line your not going to win a fantasy league with your top draft pick missing games and only having 2 good games a season.

  9. i agree with the above posts. he's not the most consistent player in fantasy for sure, which does come into play in head 2 head. however, virtually no running back will give you serious consistency and this guy has at least as good a shot as anyone to score a td/game. if you're in a roto league, consistency really doesnt matter. oh yeah, and he should be getting better in his second year and be pressured less with a more experienced qb and development of a receiving corps to aid his team's offense.

  10. Well, this is what I think: the vikings are going to give him the ball a lot because of last season and so if he gets the ball 4/10 times then he has to get good stats.  And if he gets 5 yards a carry then the will get more play and mor carries for him.  That is what I'm thinking.

  11. you got to remember that was his ROOKIE season... most RBs that are elite now didn't have as hot rookie seasons as him... those two games of 520 yds and 6 TDs were just indications of what he can bring to the league.
