Adrian Buchan and Bobby Martinez survive Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
Australia’s Adrian Buchan prevailed over Hawaii’s Keanu Asing while America’s Bobby Martinez defeated Australia’s Bede Durbidge in the third and fourth heat of Quiksilver Pro New York’s Round 2 respectively on Wednesday, September 7, at Long Beach, New York.
The success in the Round 2 heat allowed Buchan and Martinez to extend their life in the event by advancing to Round 3, while eliminating their respective opponents from the competition in the process.
After failing to make a solid impact in the first round, the 28-year-old Buchan managed to bounce back with a much better performance in his Round 2 bout against Asing, who was replacing America’s Dane Reynolds after he pulled out of the competition due
to a rib injury.
As the third heat kicked off, Buchan locked a wave to earn 5.50 points off it to take the lead. Asing responded with a 4.00-point wave to narrow the gap between him and his rival on the scoreboard.
Almost halfway through the heat, the Australian added another 6.60 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 12.10 points. Asing had ample opportunity to take the lead by making a stronger impact with his second business-wave, but he failed to capitalise
on the opportunity and only managed to collect 5.00 points off his second wave, finishing with a two-wave total of 9.00 points. Consequently, he was forced to surrender victory to Buchan, which sent him off to the next round.
The fourth heat saw America’s 29-year-old Martinez take on Durbidge for a place in the next round. Both the surfers put up a remarkable fight, but it was the former who managed to walk away with the win in the end after finishing with a heat-total of 14.06
points, which included a 6.83 and 7.23-point wave.
Durbidge scored 6.40 and 7.33 off his top-two waves to finish the heat with a two-wave total of 13.73 points, losing by a deficit of merely 0.33 points.
Buchan and Martinez will face their next opponents in yet another sudden-death Round 3, where any hiccup in the performance may very well lead to their elimination from the competition.
