Adrian Buchan and Mick Fanning make the Round 4 cut at 2012 Hurley Pro
Australian surfers Adrian Buchan and Mick Fanning put on an impressive show in their respective Round 3 heats at the 2012 Hurley Pro, sixth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, which went down at the
high-performance Lower Trestles in California, America, on Wednesday, September 19.
Buchan got the better of Brazil’s Heitor Alves in the fifth heat to advance through into the fourth round, sending his rival packing in the process.
The sixth heat saw Hawaii’s Dusty Payne conceding victory to Fanning, find himself ejected from the contention for the event title as a result while sending the latter into the next round.
The four-to-six foot waves offered by the primary event site on the latest day of the competition presented the elite ASP surfers with an ideal canvas to put their exquisite skills on display. The huge crowd in attendance, along with the global audience
following the action live through webcast expected the day to be full of exciting performances.
Pitted against Alves in the fifth heat, Buchan had his work cut out for him. As the battle got underway, the Australian surfer got off to a slow start, struggling to find his rhythm and failing to get his hands on a decent wave.
Alves, on the other hand, got off to a modest start, earning a 5.00 off his first business-wave and going on to add an additional 3.93 points to his account, thus reaching a two-wave total of 8.93 points.
Buchan showed a bit of urgency in the final minutes of the heat and stepped up to squeeze a 9.70 off his first business-wave and continued the newly-found vigour to back it up with an impressive 8.43-point ride, thus reaching a heat-total of 18.13 points.
The sixth heat saw the former two-time ASP World Champion Fanning, current No.1 on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, getting the better of Payne after putting on an exquisite performance.
The Australian powerhouse got off to an impressive start, earning a 7.67 off his first business-wave and went on to back it up with a 7.67-point ride to reach a heat-total of 15.34 points.
Payne responded with a couple of scores in the six-point range to eventually finish with a heat-total of 13.33 points. As a result, he was forced to surrender victory to his rival.
