Adrian Buchan and Taj Burrow secure place in Round 4 of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast – Surfing News
Australia’s Adrian Buchan and Taj Burrow walked away with top honours from their respective Round 3 heats at the opening event of 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, which went down at Snapper
Rocks in Queensland, Australia, on Monday, February 27.
Buchan secured his place in Round 4 after getting the better of Hawaii’s John John Florence in the 11th heat, eliminating the latter from the contention for the event-title.
The 12th heat saw Burrow prevail over South Africa’s Travis Logie to advance through into the next round, bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.
The final stop of 2011 ASP World Tour at Banzai Pipeline had clearly highlighted what Florence was capable of. The young Hawaiian justified all the hype that surrounded him prior to the 2012 ASP World Tour with an outstanding performance on the opening day
of Quiksilver Pro.
Pitted against Buchan in the 11th heat of Round 3, Florence faced a must-win situation to continue his pursuit of the event title. However, the latter utilised his local knowledge of the waves to get to a heat-total of 16.03 points, which comprised
of a 7.70 and 8.33-point wave.
Florence needed to score big to have a chance at clinching victory. Collecting a 7.00 off his first business-wave, the Hawaiian had an opportunity to seal the deal if he could land another big score. However, he only managed to add an additional 6.60 to
his account to finish with a heat-total of 13.60 points. The 2.43-point deficit forced him to concede victory to his Australian rival, sending the latter into the next round.
The final heat of Round 3 pitted the 33-year-old Burrow against Logie in a battle for survival.
As the heat commenced, Logie took an early advantage with a 6.83-point wave and soon followed it up with a 6.33-point wave to move to a heat-total of 13.16 points.
Burrow got off to a cautious start, but eventually posted a 6.50 on the score-board halfway through the heat. He immediately followed it with a 7.70-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 14.20. The score served to seal the fate of the battle in his favour,
consequently carrying him into the next round.
With the conclusion of the 12th heat, the third round as well as the third day of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover wrapped up for the day.
