Adrian Buchan off to an ideal start at the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro
Australia’s Adrian Buchan confidently made his way through into the fourth round (Round of 48) of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro after putting on a spectacular performance in the 21st heat of Round 3 (Round
of 96) that went down at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Wednesday, May 2.
His fellow countryperson and former ASP World Tour Champion Mark Occhilupo was successful in extending his life in the competition as well after securing runner-up position to accompany Buchan into the next round.
The atmosphere at the primary event site was electric on day 2 of the latest ASP PRIME event, thanks to a series of enthralling surfing battles that were featured throughout the day. The local and international surfing talent held nothing back as they took
each other on in the flawless waves of Lower Trestles, determined to collect perfect results to advance through into the next round of the competition and thus remain in contention for the coveted ASP ranking points and huge prize money that were there for
grabs.
Pitted against Occhilupo, Brazil’s Wiggolly Dantas and Puerto Rico’s Dylan Graves in the 21st heat, Buchan put on a performance that was nothing short of epic. The Australian surfer took very little time to adapt to the clean two-to-four foot
waves that were on offer and managed to lock his first business-wave quite early in the heat to unload a series of exquisite tricks. The effort earned him 8.50 points, thus putting him in an early lead. He soon added another 8.43 points to his account to take
his heat-total to 16.93 points, which served to seal the fate of the bout in his favour.
Occhilupo got off to a promising start, earning a 5.93 off his first business-wave in the opening minutes of the four-man bout. However, he failed to rise up to the standard set his compatriot in the heat. Scoring a 6.70 off his second business-wave, he
finished with a heat-total of 12.63 points.
Dantas finished in third place with a heat-total of 11.90 points, which included a 5.50 and 6.40 points, while Graves rounded out the bottom-two positions with a two-wave total of 9.67 points, comprising of a 4.77 and 4.90-point wave. Both the surfers got
removed from the latest ASP PRIME event.
