Adrian Buchan prevails over Kieren Perrow to enter Round 3 at Volcom Fiji Pro
Australia’s Adrian Buchan barely got the better of his fellow countryperson Kieren Perrow in the eighth heat of Volcom Fiji Pro’s Round 2 that went down at the main venue of Cloudbreak in Tavarua, Fiji, on Monday, June 4.
The victory in the second round served to confirm Buchan’s place in the third round, while bringing the latest stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour to a premature end.
The best surfers from around the world had converged to Fiji to resume their campaign for the coveted ASP World Title. More than half the competition field found themselves relegated to the second round following their Round 1 defeat. As a result, the latest
day of the competition promised to deliver a series of exquisite performances. The surfing conditions on hand were nothing short of ideal either, with four-to-four foot waves breaking at the primary event and thus offering plenty of scoring potent opportunities
for the surfers to put their phenomenal surfing skills on display.
The eighth heat of Round 2 pitted Buchan against Perrow in a man-on-man battle for the Round 2 spot. Both the surfers had seemed a bit shaky during their previous heat and thus needed to work on their rhythm on urgent basis if they wished to stay alive in
contention for the event title.
As the battle got underway, Perrow got off to a promising start, getting hold of a good wave in the opening minutes of the heat to post a 6.83 on the score-board. However, he soon found himself under pressure as Buchan stepped up to take control of the heat.
The Australian surfer locked a juicy left-hander to unload a series of powerful turns, earning an 8.17 on the score-board. He kept the momentum going and successfully added another impressive 8.87 to his account, thus moving to a heat-total of 17.04 points.
Pushed against the corner, Perrow found himself in a desperate situation, with the chances of clinching the win fading. Despite an excellent effort in the final minutes of the heat, which allowed him to post a 9.40 on the score-board, he finished with a
heat-total of 16.23 points. As a result, he got eliminated from the competition while sending his rival into the next round.
