Adrian Gonzalez signed on to the Boston Red Sox for the next seven years – MLB News
Adrian Gonzalez has signed on to the Boston Red Sox for the next seven years which would pay him a hefty $154-million. The deal was more than profitable for Gonzalez who received a $6-million signing on bonus along with the $21-million he would be getting
every year from 2012 to 2016. In 2017 and 2018 it has been reported that he would be getting $21.5-million. The deal has a partial no-trade clause in it as well.
The general manager for the Red Sox, Theo Epstein said, “I hope this will go down, and I believe this will go down, as a great day for the organization. Adrian’s going to make a major impact here for a long time.”
In 11 games with Boston, Gonzalez has hit at .268 along with seven RBIs and one home-run. He expressed his relief over the matter by saying now that the contract situation was done and over with, he didn’t have time to think about anything else but winning.
"I'm a person that really likes to just focus on winning," he said. "When the focus isn't on the team, from my personal standpoint, that's not where I want to be."
The Red Sox currently have the worst record in baseball which is 2-9. "We are disappointed. Never want to start this way," Gonzalez said. "We have faith in ourselves. We're going to turn this thing around." The three time All Star is currently in his eighth
season. His career average is of .282 and he has belted 169 home-runs so far.
The Red Sox had previously acquired Gonzalez from the San Diego Padres during the off-season. Waiting until the season was underway saved the Red Sox quite a bit of tax money. Gonzalez had one more year left with the Padres in his contract and after that
he would’ve hit the free agent market, but the Red Sox signed him up before anyone else had the chance.
This is the second large scale and long term contract that the Red Sox have signed lately. Previously they had signed on Carl Crawford for a seven year deal as well which would pay him a good $142-million. The contract that the team signed with Adrian is
the second biggest since the team’s current ownership took charge. Many people signalled that there may be a vital shift in how things were conducted within the team since the new ownership but the general manager replied in negative by saying, "In our minds,
Adrian was the right player at the right time."
It will be interesting to see how Adrian performs with the Red Sox team. Only time will tell as the season moves forward.
