Adrian Gonzalez’s hitting helps Boston Red Sox defeat Baltimore Orioles 8-7 – MLB Update
Adrian Gonzalez managed to hit a massive two-run double to give the Boston Red Sox their first win in the two game series against Baltimore Orioles 8-7 at Fenway Park, Boston on Monday, May 16.
Gonzalez, who became part of the Red Sox after an astounding $154 million for seven years, has remained impressive whenever and wherever he has played. The last ten games that Gonzalez has had, namely in Boston, New York and Toronto, he has maintained hitting
.348 with no less than seven homers and 16 RBIs in 46 at bats. "I don't worry about statistics or is the park good for me or not," Gonzalez said. "I just go out there and have fun."
Interestingly, Monday night’s game had a start that favoured Baltimore. They maintained a 6-0 lead up until the sixth inning. Something that the team manager voiced with a tinge of regret. "We had a lot of chances to open it up," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter
said. "You get a lot of walks and you never have enough [runs]. We had a chance to stem the tide early."
Derrek Lee and Vladimir Guerrero’s singles brought an early 2-0 lead to the Orioles in the very first inning when Daisuke Matsuzaka came out to pitch for Boston. Chris Tillman, on the other hand, was unyielding and did not allow any run to the otherwise
aggressive Boston hitters.
Matt Wieters scored the third run for the Orioles in the third inning. Boston had yet to open their account when the lead went to 5-0 in the fifth inning with the singles of Mark Reynolds and J.J. Hardy. Adam Jones made it 6-0 for the Orioles in the sixth
inning.
It is here that Boston laid the foundation of their ultimate win. The flow of run started in the sixth inning with each Boston hitter doing something magical. Jed Lowrie scored the first run for the Red Sox, as Jason Varitek came up with the second run following
Gonzalez who scored the third run for his team. Kevin Youkilis then showed his class with a two-run homer which gave the Red Sox a total of five runs in the inning.
Baltimore had suddenly come down to a 6-5 lead from an earlier 6-0 dominance. However, they seemed unwilling to yield so easily. Mark Reynolds played his part in the seventh inning with another single to centre, taking up the lead to 7-5. The Red Sox jumped
back with another single in the seventh inning to take the score to 7-6. A Red Sox single came with Jason Varitek’s hit to left.
The game was at the most exhilarating moment and none of the teams seemed willing to let it slip out of their hand especially after the surprising come-back of the Red Sox with five runs in the sixth inning. Alfredo Aceves pitched a shut-out eighth and ninth
innings to keep the game at 7-6 following which a surprise awaited Baltimore.
Gonzalez, who was previously part of San Diego Padres, stormed back into the game with a massive two-run double to reverse the tide in Boston’s favour and giving his team a much awaited 8-7 victory against the Orioles.
