One of the most important men behind the success of Red Bull this season, Adrian Newey calls the 2010 Formula One season a tough one because of all the finger-pointing and sniping faced by the team from rivals over the legality
of the team’s car.
Newey is the Chief Designer of the package of the team, the RB6 which helped team nab both the Driver’s as well as Constructor’s Championship this season. Now as the season has packed up triumphantly for the team, Newey proclaimed
that it was a big “annoyance” for the team all through the season as their rivals kept criticising their car instead of paying attention towards their own packages.
The Red Bull’s car has been the fastest on the track all through the season which gave birth to all sorts of accusations and speculations. As the season reached it’s mid, the team was suspected to have more flexibility in its front
wing than permitted by the FIA rules. Prior to some of the major mid season races, very strict front wing tests were carried, however, the team cleared the inspection cleanly every time.
Now, recalling the events of the season, Newey admits that the accusations and enmity seen by him from all the teams this year, has never been witnessed by him before. Like always, once again he insisted that all the charges were
only to discourage the team, and that their package was always placed and designed keeping the regulations strictly in mind.
While talking to the media earlier this week he said, “It wasn’t a distraction, but it was an annoyance. I’ve got to say I’ve never known a season quite like this one for the petty finger pointing that’s gone on in the paddock.
It’s a shame, but the bottom line is that what we’ve done with the front wing has been endlessly investigated by the press and the FIA.”
He further added that he would never want to see such pointless blames ever again. He insisted that the FIA must look at it seriously and prevent such things from taking place in the future.
Moreover, Red Bull’s dominance during the qualifying also got a lot of criticism. Many stories about their illegal activities occupied space in the media however, nothing was ever proved against them. The title winner of the season,
Sebastian Vettel alone took ten pole positions, starting ten of the races ahead of others out of the total nineteen.
Moreover, the team also bagged nine race wins, with five victories taken by Vettel while the other team driver, Mark Webber was able to conquer four rounds.
While explaining the exceptionally good performance, Newey proudly exclaimed that it was only a fortunate combination of two brilliant drivers, a self motivated team and an extraordinarily brilliant car. He said that it was not
that the car had some illegality or some magical thing about it rather it was an extraordinary devotion and brilliance of all the designers, engineers and mechanics of the team that made it the best on the track.
Earlier this season Newey told that the team came up with some very big technical changes in their 2009’s design. He believes that these alternations went very well for them and transformed the team’s car from an ordinary midfield
runner into an unbeatable championship winner.
When asked about his fears and aspirations regarding the changed rules of FIA that bans the double diffusers and F-ducts he expressed his hope that things would be better next season as well.
However, he admitted that things would be a little tougher and trickier due to the introduction of the new Pirelli tyres however he stays positive and is looking forward for another brilliant year for the team.
