Adrian Newey: Red Bull Racing Team facing tough time in understanding KERS – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing Team technical director Adrian Newey has said that they are finding it pretty difficult to understand the Kinetic Energy Recovery System which they used it for the first time at the Malaysian Grand Prix.
“For us it's still a steep learning curve. We're not a manufacturer team and that probably hurts us a little bit. We don't have quite the resources and experience that some of the manufacturers have in that department,” said Newey.
The team was unable to get the best out of the device though as they faced some major reliability issues and eventually decided to stop using it midway through the race.
However, Red Bull were the best team on the track once again as Sebastian Vettel scored his second consecutive win of the season from two races.
Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber on the other hand is not doing well as he has been unable to score a single podium position so far despite the team’s advantage over its rivals in terms of pace.
The 2010 Formula 1 world champion Vettel stated that although he did not use the KERS in the Malaysian GP, he thinks not using it would be a disadvantage for them.
“I was lapping a second a lap quicker than Lewis for two or three laps, I think. At that stage, I don't think I used KERS, but I can assure you that not running KERS, for us, is a disadvantage,” said the reigning world champion.
He added that the team worked really hard but unfortunately, something went wrong and the KERS stopped working midway through the race. He said that he is still not aware of its problems yet.
Other than that, Newey stated that the team has modified the Magneti Marelli system provided by Renault in order to make it suitable for the RB7.
Nevertheless, Red Bull are still miles ahead of the rest of the pack with the exception of McLaren as they are improving their car noticeably.
According to the lap times of the qualifying session, it seems that McLaren are almost 1 tenths of a second slower than the RB7 in terms of pace. Let’s see if they are able to challenge Red Bull in the Chinese Grand Prix.
