Adrian Newey: Red Bull to suffer from off-throttle Blown Diffuser ban in 2011 – Formula 1 news
Red Bull technical director Adrian Newey has said that his team will be heavily jolted from the off-throttle Blown Diffuser clampdown imposed by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
The ban will come into effect from the Silverstone Grand Prix of the 2011 Formula 1 season, scheduled to take place this weekend, July 10, 2011.
Newey added that all the other top running teams copied Red Bull’s design and Diffuser is not an integral part of their cars. Newey added that he has been jolted heavily that the FIA declared this innovation as illegal for the rest of the season.
He further said that normally at this time of the year, teams start to look at next year’s cars but due to the Blown Diffuser clampdown, Red Bull had to re-design the car which has escalated their budget as well.
Newey commented, “It's also a difficult time of the year because this is when we are looking at next year's car as well. In a normal development cycle you split your resources at this time of year, but suddenly this year's resource has extra workload to
cope with.”
He further denied that Red Bull will not win the 2011 championship and said that their dominance can only be challenged in the ongoing season if any team wins back-to-back races just like they have done so far.
Newey added, “We're less than half the way through the championship (11 races remaining). So if somebody has the finish to the year as we've had the start to, then they could easily overtake us. We certainly can't take anything as read.”
Red Bull are leading both the drivers’ and constructors’ championship tables of the 2011 Formula 1 season with a comprehensive lead.
Although Newey stated that the Diffuser is going to hurt the Milton Keynes-based team for the rest of the season, the Brit thinks that no team is in contention of coming close to them.
Nevertheless, the season continues in Silverstone on July 10 and it will be interesting to see how much Red Bull lose in terms of pace.
