Adrian Newey believes that “movable rear wings can improve racing”
Red Bull Racing Team’s Technical Director, Adrian Newey, is believed to be the main reason behind the team’s success.
Adrian is one of the most learned technical directors of the sport and since he has a lot of knowledge and experience about the dynamics of a Formula 1 car, he has the potential of enabling a back-running team into a race winning team.
Since he joined Red Bull, the team started winning races and it seems that he is confident about the 2011 Formula 1 season as well since the team claims that they have a very strong car.
Adrian believes that the movable rear wing technology, which is going to be allowed in 2011 according to the rules and regulations report by the FIA, is going to make racing even more exciting if the teams extract the best out of the device.
He stated that the device requires some fine tuning and that it is going to benefit the teams vitally in 2011.
“The thing with the moveable rear wing, of course, is that we're allowed to deploy it all the time in qualifying but only in close proximity in the race, so that will no doubt have a big effect on how a race unfolds”, said Adrian.
Movable rear wings are used to increase or decrease the down-force of the car while it is being driven. This means that the teams can increase their car’s down-force at a long straight in order to increase their top speed even if they are driving at a track
where a lot of grip is required.
This will enable the drivers to overtake more easily but according to the FIA’s rules and regulations report, the teams will only be allowed to use this device at certain parts of each track.
“I don't think that's a problem because it's very easy to tune it, tune where it's applied. So that is something where I expect the FIA will be developing their learning and adjusting how it is allowed to be used through the season”, he added.
Other than that, the teams will be allowed to use KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) as well, which is a device that stores the heat energy generating by the car mainly due to braking, and then it converts it into kinetic energy. We can say that it gives
a sort of a “boost” after storing a particular amount of energy in the device.
The top running teams are expected to use these devices and these devices will make the 2011 Formula 1 season more exciting but at the same time, a bit predictable as well.
