Adrian Newey labels 2011 Formula One season as “unpredictable”
The dominance exhibited by Red Bull Racing on the tracks of 2010 season is keeping the rival teams at their toes, as they fear to see similar pace and form by the team, next year as well. However, the team’s technical chief, Adrian Newey dismisses all the
pre-season guesses, saying that it is really impossible to predict the team’s dominance before the start of 2011 season.
The Austrian squad possessed the fastest car and the best two drivers in 2010. The team was able to create an impression on the track, right from the start of the season, and claimed the first drivers' as well as the constructors' championship, only after
its 6th season in the series. The Newey-designed RB6 was clearly the fastest car on the track and the closest rivals, Ferrari and McLaren kept chasing it all through the year but couldn’t prove their mettle in front of Red Bull’s ferocious pace.
However, when asked now, Newey declared that predicting anything is impossible and only time will tell if a similar pace by the car will be seen on the next years’ grid or not. The designer proclaimed that FIA has come up with several changes in its regulations,
which will not only alter the face of the championship but will also make the competition tougher and more challenging for all the teams.
While talking to the media earlier today, he stated, “I think it is impossible to forecast. The truth is - and that is the great thing about motor racing - that things can change very quickly as we all know. If other people do a better job than we do over
the winter then it will change."
Newey explained saying that having built the fastest car in past two years does not guarantee that the team will be able to do the same next year as well. He said that Formula One is a competitive sport, and how good you do is not all, more important is
that how well the others do around you. However, the master-mind designer accepted the fact that winning two titles has enhanced the confidence of the team members, and also increased the hunger for victory after it has been tasted once.
Adrian further added that over the past six years, the team has evolved from a group of junior boys to title winners, which has made them learn a lot. He concluded saying, "But hopefully what it does mean though is that we are starting to understand the
process of how you go about designing a decent car … I guess the concern is that as regulations stay stable, and you go deeper and deeper into a set of regulations, then it becomes more of an iterative process. Whether we can iterate as well as some of the
more established teams has yet to be demonstrated."
