Adrian Newey says that developing the RB8 was frustrating – Formula 1 news
Red Bull’s chief technical officer, Adrian Newey has admitted that developing the 2012 Red Bull car, RB8, was very frustrating.
“We came out with a car which had flashes of pace,” Newey told Servus TV. “Sebastian won in Bahrain, Mark [Webber] won in Monaco. But we didn't have the level of consistency we wanted, and as an engineer that was very frustrating because the truth is we
didn't properly understand the car and what was happening. We made a step at Valencia and then we made a further step in Singapore and that gave us that purple patch where Sebastian won four on the trot which really set up the Championship challenge.”
Red Bull Racing has become the fourth F1 team to win three consecutive constructors’ titles and their ace driver, Sebastian Vettel, is now the youngest triple champion.
However, team principal, Christian Horner, has stated that in F1 you cannot make the mistake of underestimating your rivals. He said that it is obvious how much motivated Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes and Lotus have been this past season. He admitted that their
achievements over the last three years have definitely been brilliant and they are quite determined to maintain their position. He insisted that the team is taking nothing for granted and this is what their goal is for the upcoming season.
Newey has earned much respect for his car developing skills among the F1 community. All three of the Red Bull titles were won in cars made by Newey. Besides these, Newey has won five titles with Williams and one with McLaren.
This season, Red Bull secured the title after the penultimate Grand Prix in Austin. The team admits that this season was very long and stressful for them. One of the reasons for the difficulty in developing the RB8 was cited by Newey as the new exhaust system.
Newey added that their achievement shows that they have been consistent in developing their car and performance on the track.
Horner has admitted that Newey is a bit behind the schedule in developing the 2013 RB9 as they were busy working on the RB8, making it strong for winning the title, towards the end of the season.
