Adrian Newey shows concern about first lap incident in Brazilian GP – Formula 1 news
Red Bull Racing chief technical officer, Adrian Newey has shown concern about Sebastian Vettel’s collision with Bruno Senna of Williams on the first lap of the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix and thought that it was all over.
Vettel had a clash with Senna on the opening lap which damaged the rear left of his car and Newey assumed that it was the end for the veteran German driver.
“To be perfectly honest after the first lap I thought it was probably all over,” he told Sky Sports F1.
Moreover, he said that they were expecting very bad outcome as the damage in the car’s exhaust often cracks and the body eventually catches fire.
“I was pretty surprised to see the car going. Sebastian radioed in thinking he wasn't going to be able to get going. We then photographed the car going past and saw all bodywork damage, and more worryingly almost, a huge crease in exhaust system. Normally
that sort of damage the exhaust is going to crack and bodywork will catch fire and that will be the end of that,” he said.
Nevertheless, he said that they reacted very well to the tough conditions and came up with the right strategy for the race. He also asserted that they faced many issues during the race which included the rain too, but they fought hard to secure competitive
result.
“And of course one lap later it was raining and we needed intermediates,” he added.
Even though, the 25-year-old could only secure 6th place finish in the dramatic season finale. Nonetheless, he still managed to claim his third consecutive world championship title by three points from his main rival, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari
who secured second podium finish in the final race.
It will be important to mention that Vettel has not dominated in this season as compared to the last one in which he won 11 races, but he was still deemed as the most competent title contender and has proven his potential after winning his third championship
title.
Let’s see how the three-time world champion performs in the coming year and how he competes with his major opponents.
