Adrian Newey thinks Red Bull’s front wing debate is boring – Formula 1
Adrian Newey of the Red Bull Racing team has played down the criticism by one of the Formula 1 teams about the RB7’s front wing. Newey commented that the critic team has just tried to change the FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile) rule in the
process, but has not succeeded.
The McLaren team and their drivers were the first to point out that the RB7’s front wing is very low to the ground and conflicts with the FIA’s rule. The authorities checked the wing and cleared it for any breach in the law.
Newey has now commented that the front wing issue was vague criticism by the one of the teams. “To be honest, it's a bit boring. Frankly, I think it's an effort by one team in particular to get a change in regulations because the regulations are very clear
in terms of what you can and cannot do with the front wing.” Newey further explained that the team’s strategy in building the car is to have alternate positions for front and rear wing, if the front wing is low than the rear will be high.
Newey further cited the example of the Renault team who came up with a new and innovative exhaust system which was tested by many teams in the pre-season testing sessions. Newey further commented that the Red Bull team never tested the idea and was better
off not using it, unlike other who had already put the system through its paces.
The Red Bull team is currently at the top of both the championship tables of the 2011 season for the driver’s and the constructor’s. Their closest rivals are the McLaren team who are using the opposite assembly to the one Red Bull use and their front wing
is high and the rear wing is slightly low.
The next race will be contested in Turkey on the 8th of May and the McLaren team will do their level best to overcome Red Bull’s wing advantage. As Mercedes’ Ross Brawn said, either get rid of it or follow it.
