Adrian Sikora thrashes Divij Sharan in the first qualifier – Marburg Open 2012 CH
Slovakia’s Adrian Sikora, ranked 535th in the world, disposed off the world number 1064, Divij Sharan of India, in straight sets in the first round of the qualifying draw at the Marburg Open in Germany on Saturday. The
Slovakian allowed his opponent to claim only three games in the entire encounter, beating him 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour and eight minutes.
Sikora moved ahead from the beginning of the match, as he held his opening serve and snatched a break in the following game to take a 2-0 lead. Sharan struck back in the third to reduce the trail to 1-2 but lost his serve again
in the next one to go down 1-3. Sikora did not allow his Indian opponent to stage a comeback again, capturing three games in a row to seal it 6-1.
The Slovakian hit one ace and committed the same number of double fault in the first set. His first serve percentage was pathetically low at 36, converting just five of the eight of them into points. However, his second delivery
conversion rate was above average, as he grabbed 10 of the 14 points on them. The 23-year-old performed quite well on the replies to Sharan’s serves, securing six of the nine first and seven of the 11 second return points. The Slovakian could not put away
the only break threat he came across but compensated that by utilising three of the four opportunities he created of his own.
Sikora and Sharan started the second set by holding their serve in the opening two games and evening out the score at 1-1. The Slovakian managed to grab a breakthrough in the third and won his subsequent serve to attain a 3-1 advantage.
Sikora hit another blow to the Indian in the seventh and made the most of it to win 6-2.
The Slovakian smacked a single ace once again but did not commit any double fault this time. He drastically improved his performance on serve, keeping the first delivery percentage on 68 and claiming 11 of the 13 points on them.
Sikora was almost flawless on the second ones, as he lost only one point, clinching five of the six. He also fared brilliantly on the second returns, pocketing 10 of the 16. The Slovakian did not face any break point and converted two of the seven he received
in the second set.
