Adrian Ungur, Stefano Galvani proceed to the semi-finals – Carisap Tennis Cup 2011
Adrian Ungur beats Alessio Di Mauro 7-6(3), 7-6(1)
Romanian Adrian Ungur, ranked 176th in the world, prevailed over world number 165 Alessio Di Mauro of Italy in straight sets 7-6(3), 7-6(1) in the quarterfinals of Carisap Tennis Cup at the clay courts of San Benedetto
del Tronto in Italy on Friday. The match lasted for two hours and 29 minutes.
Ungur and Di Mauro failed to break each other in the opening set, levelling the score at 6-6 and forcing a tie-break. The Romanian grabbed three mini-breaks in the tie-break, clinching it 7-3. The five feet and ten inches tall
fired 63 percent of the first serves and a single ace in the opening set.
In the second set, the Romanian made a good start as he broke Di Mauro in the second game to claim a 2-0 lead. However, the Italian broke back in the fifth game and held his next service game to level the score at 3-3. Ungur and
Di Mauro held their serve in the next six games to take the set to another tie-break. The Romanian was almost flawless in the tie-break, grabbing it 7-1.
Ungur is drawn to play second seed, Spaniard Pere Riba in the semi-finals.
Stefano Galvani defeats Alessandro Giannessi 6-4, 3-1 Ret’d
World number 250 Stefano Galvani of Italy reached semi-finals after his compatriot Alessandro Giannessi, ranked 279th in the world, retired due to an injury. Giannessi was trailing 4-6, 1-3 when he decided to quit the
match. The match lasted for just 58 minutes.
Galvani and Giannessi broke each other on a number of occasions in the first set but it was the 34-year-old who clinched third and decisive break of serve to win the set 6-4. The Italian kept his first serve percentage at 61 percent
and fired three aces in the opening set. The right-handed returned superbly, sealing an incredible 58 percent of the first return points. Galvani converted three of the six break points he received on Giannessi’s serve in the first set.
The Italian broke his countryman in the third game of the second set and held his serve in the next game to take a 3-1 lead. At this moment, Giannessi discontinued the match due to injury. Galvani made full use of his big serves,
smacking 78 percent of the first serves and a couple of aces in the second set. The five feet and ten inches tall amazingly grabbed 100 percent of the first service points in the second set.
Galvani is slated to take on another compatriot Paolo Lorenzi in the semi-finals.
