Adrian Ungur crushes Aljaz Bedene to enter title-round – ATP Challenger Tour Finals 2012
Romanian challenger, Adrian Ungur, devastated the fifth seed, Aljaz Bedene, with a breadstick at the ATP Challenger Tour Finals on Friday. He nudged up a 6-4, 6-1 victory against the 23-year-old to secure a place in the final showdown at this year-ending
tournament taking place in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Seeded sixth in this tournament, Ungur unleashed his tremendous skills to outclass the Slovenian in their first encounter. After stealing the spotlight in one hour and 15 minutes, the Romanian booked a spot in the final round at this indoor hard court tournament.
“I made a lot of unforced errors in the beginning,” the Romanian commented in a courtside interview after the match. “I wasn’t relaxed, I don’t know what happened. But then I managed to turn it around. I feel much better than yesterday. You always feel good
when you win.”
Ungur high-spiritedly entered the Ginásio do Ibirapuera. He made a sloppy start and suffered the first blow in the opening game. The Romanian recovered in the fourth game but lost his serve again, eventually trailing at 2-3. However, Ungur remained focused
and not only snatched his break back in sixth game but got the breakthrough in the last game, consequently clicking the opener with a 6-4 win.
Ranked 112th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Ungur went out of control in the following set. After Bedene held his serve in the second game, the Romanian unveiled his true class and went on a five-game tear.
Overall, Ungur dropped his serve twice but cashed five out of eight break chances to prevail. He clobbered a better first serve share and impressively marked 23 out of 37 points on it.
The Romanian veteran reaches semis after triumphing over Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo and Guido Pella in his opening two round robin matches. He topped his green group with these results.
“I’m really happy. To be honest, I didn’t expect it,” Unger reflected. “I wanted to play three matches and see what happens. And now I’m in the final.”
Up next for Ungur is the Argentinean star, Guido Pella, who outshined Victory Hanescu in straight sets to set up this meeting.
