Adrian Ungur defeats Andrej Martin in the quarter-finals – Trnava Challenger 2012
Right-hander Romanian participant, Adrian Ungur, defeated the local challenger, Andrej Martin, in the quarter-finals of the Trnava Challenger 2012, held on the hard courts of Slovakia. Ungur summed up his 6-1,
3-6, 6-4 win in nearly one hour and 55 minutes.
The duo encountered each other for the third time and the second seeded Ungur maintained his 3-0 lead in the head-to-head series. He defeated his competitor in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(7) in the first round of
the Turin Challenger in the year 2011.
27-year-old Ungur drew the first blood and held his initial serve in the opener. The local challenger was unable to withstand the pressure of his contender and could not bag away any scores. The Romanian progressed
in the set without facing any resistance and busted his opponent’s serve twice i.e. in the fourth and sixth game respectively. Towards the end, he concluded the set with his outstanding score of 6-1.
The players exchanged momentum in the second set and reversed the winning order. The world number 232, Martin, displayed a strong game plan and held his initial serve. He broke his rival’s serve twice i.e. in
the fourth and sixth game, piling up pressure on Ungur, who struggle hard to regain his former impetus. He broke Martin’s serve in the seventh game but was unable to strike the lead and his confidence crumbled down, resulting in closing the set with a 3-6
loss.
The decider was surely a double deal for the two candidates as they battled hard to secure the top spot. Like before, the Romanian professional displayed a classic start but at once the score line evened out
to 2-all in the fourth game. The right-hander Slovakian took maximum advantage of the situation and secured the lead in the fifth game, stamping the score line with his 4-3 lead. However, this aroused a panic attack for Ungur and immediately he squared down
the score line with 4-all in the third last game. He busted Martin’s serve and clinched the last two games, concluding the match with his 6-4 win.
The 27-year-old Romanian senior manifested lower first serve accuracy and double faulted four times even. He converted 41 of 60 first and 13 of 31 second delivery points. He secured the advantage in the game
by capitalizing five of six serve break, whereas the competitor could only snatch away three of 14. The right-hander, Martin maintained 71 percent initial serve precision, bagging away 36 of 56 first serve points.
For the next roundup, the higher-ranked Romanian will battle against the eighth seeded, Matteo Viola.
