Adrian Ungur outclasses Michail Elgin in the second round qualifiers of the Serbia Open
Seventh seeded Romanian, Adrian Ungur stood victorious against Michail Elgin of Russia in the second round of the qualifying draws of the Serbia Open, being played at the Tennis Center Novak complex in Belgrade, Serbia on Sunday.
Ungur defeated his opponent in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, taking one hour and twenty four minutes to dispense the Russian out of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour tournament.
The Romanian faced limited resistance from his bleak opponent and cruised through the contest with ease. Ungur kept the games short and orchestrated most of the rallies, depicting his control over the contest. He crafted nine chances
to break the opponent’s serve and converted four of them to his advantage, while his opponent struck just one break point in the whole matchup.
Four double faults were conceded by Ungur in the contest but he compensated for them by bagging critical points on regularity. A total of 113 points were played in the game, with Ungur winning 65 and Elgin nabbing 48 of them. The
Romanian denied his opponent from breaking his serve on three different occasions in the matchup and kept him under pressure with his attacking moves throughout the competition.
The Russian had to face problems early as his aggressive opponent stung a serve break in the very first game of the opener. Elgin took time to get his eye in the game and steadily regrouped to construct a break point in the fifth
game to reduce the deficit to 2-3. His flare didn’t last longer as Ungur launched a series of attacking manoeuvres, including frequent forays to the net and converting plenty of volleys into cracking cross-court winners. The seventh seed clouted two consecutive
serve breaks to close the opening set at 6-3 and get the upper hand in the contest.
The following set brought no luck for the Russian as he slumped further in the game. Ungur clinched 20 of 28 total serve points in the second set and faced no break points from his opponent. A critical serve break in the seventh
game proved decisive for the Romanian, who took momentum from it to conclude victory at 6-3. Ungur now steps into the final round of the qualifiers and needs just one more victory to qualify for the main draws of the Serbia Open.
Up next for Ungur is Marsel Ilhan, the second seeded Turk competitor who defeated Nicolas Devilder of France in the second round.
