Adrian Ungur outplays Marsel Ilhan to cruise through the final round qualifiers of the Serbia Open
Qualifying second seed Marsel Ilhan of Turkey crashed out of the final round qualies of the Serbia Open, at the hands of the seventh seeded Adrian Ungur of Romania. In the Monday’s match at the Tennis Center Novak complex, Ungur
crushed the Turk competitor in straight sets 6-4, 6-0, to make it to the main draws of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
26-years-old Ungur continued to impress tennis fans at Belgrade and totally outclassed the second seed in just one hour and four minutes. He had a steady start to the contest but gradually gathered up pace to blow away Ilhan in
the second set without losing a single game. Although the Romanian didn’t serve up to the mark, his points winning proficiency was phenomenal in the game. Ungur delivered just 59 per cent of his first serve on target, conceding four double faults and secured
19 out of 26 points on it to remain on top of the game.
Ilhan has been in tough times in his recent two encounters but managed to manoeuvre through to the final round of the qualifying draws. However, the Turk had no chance against the strong Romanian opponent and failed to hold serve
in any of his games in the second set. Ilhan had a decent start to the contest, striking two serve breaks in the opening set but completely lost his steam in the next set to let Ungur race away to victory.
The contest had an aggressive start from the two competitors and exchange of assertive winners was witnessed early in the opener. Ungur dropped his serve twice but kept attacking his opponent, constructing break opportunities on
regularity. He had seven break chances but converted just three of them, which proved sufficient for him to close out the first set at 6-4.
A dramatic downturn was observed in Ilhan’s game in the following set, as a series of errant strokes was seen on his part. The Turk completely lost his grip over the contest and kept crumbling under the pressure of defeat. Despite
of a below par first serve of just 44 per cent, Ungur clinched 100 points on it and stung three straight beaks to rocket away to victory at 6-0. Ilhan didn’t hold serve in a single game in and bestowed the second set in just 25 minutes of play.
With his authoritative win over Ilhan, Ungur books a berth in the main draws of the Serbia Open and will be facing Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain first up on Tuesday.
