Adrian Ungur strains past Peter Gojowczyk to clinch title win – International Tennis Trophy 2011 CH
After an enthralling contest at the clay courts of Manerbio, Italy, the unseeded Romanian, Adrian Ungur, disposed of Peter Gojowczyk of Germany to win the final of International Tennis Trophy on Sunday afternoon.
The contest lasted for two hours and twenty one minutes of exciting tennis play, with Unger settling the final scores at 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2, to claim the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event.
It was an evenly poised game of tennis, with both contestants stretching each other to his limits. 22-year-old German had a brilliant start to the contest and bagged the opening set early to get the upper hand in the contest. Gojowczyk
continued with his impetus in the following set as well but the Romanian opponent sized a critical opportunity in the second set tie breaker to level the contest at one-set a piece. Ungur then went on to cruise through the final set to register a comprehensive
championship title victory at Manerbio.
The Romanian contestant fired 13 aces and reeled off 47 out of 61 first serve points the matchup, while his opponent replied with 10 aces and 43 out of 57 first serve points to finish the contest on the losing side. Ungur fully
availed the two break opportunities he had in the game but Gojowczyk squandered five break points and converted merely one to lose the matchup.
The opener was off to a steady start, with both men trying to get settled in the game. A regular game was seen till 4-4, when Gojowczyk made the first move by breaking the Romanian serve to lead 5-4 and then served out of the first
set with the utmost ease.
None of the contestants was able to register a serve break in the second set and score board kept ticking on even terms. Ungur held his serve in all his games this time round and gave no opportunity to the German to crack in a
serve break in the set, dragging the set into a tie breaker round at 6-6. The unseeded Romanian took hold of the tie breaker round with an early mini-break and then kept his lead to bag the second set at 7-6(4), levelling the matchup at one-all.
Ungur turned absolutely ballistic in the final set and break Gojowczyk twice in a row to race away to victory in style. The Romanian grabbed the Challenger Tour title by taking the third set at 6-2, dispensing out Gojowczyk with
ease.
