Adrian Ungur stuns Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in the semis – International Tennis Trophy 2011 CH
A surprising result in the semi-finals of the International Tennis Trophy, as the eighth seeded Spanish contestant, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, crashed out of the competition at the hands of the unseeded semi-finalist, Adrian Ungur
of Romania, on Saturday afternoon.
The contest took place on the clay courts of Manerbio, Italy, with the Romanian disposing of Hidalgo in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, to make it to the final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event. The
contest took one hour and eighteen minutes of play to conclude in the favour of the unseeded Ungur.
The contest appeared pretty one-sided right from the beginning, with Ungur dominating throughout to come out as the winner in the end. The Romanian gave absolutely no chance to his opponent to get settled in the game and launches
a series of forays right from the beginning to take the early advantage in the game and kept pressurising Hidalgo to submit.
Ungur delivered 57 per cent of his serve on target and secured 17 out of 26 first serve points in the game to conclude victory in the second set. He crafted nine break opportunities in the matchup and converted six out of them
to drive the Spaniard out of the competition with the utmost ease. Hidalgo cashed in just two of his three break points to finish the match on the losing side in the end.
Eighth seeded Spaniard dropped his serve in the third game and again in the fifth game of the contest to let Ungur off to a flying start, leading the set at 5-1. Hidalgo registered his first serve break of the day in the eighth
game to reduce his deficit to 3-5 but a cracking break point conversion from the Romanian in the very next game left him answerless, losing the first set at 3-6.
The unseeded Romanian kept his winning thrust in the following set as well, nailing two straight serve breaks to race away to 4-0 to inch closer to victory. Ungur secured eight of the 15 first serve points in the second set to
get a substantial position in the matchup. Hidalgo made a last attempt to break the shackles in the fifth game by breaking the Romanian serve but it came a bit too late, as Ungur raced away to victory at 6-2, getting through to the final of the Challenger
Tour event to face Peter Gojowczyk for the title.
