Adrian Ungur upsets Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo in round robin clash – Challenger Tour Finals 2012
Sixth seeded Romanian contender, Adrian Ungur, adjusted well on the hard courts and beat the fourth seed, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain, in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in his first match in Group A at the Challenger Tour Finals.
This is the second edition of this event and this time it is being held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The Romanian player is participating in his first hard court tournament on the Challenger circuit in this season. It took him two hours and four minutes to register this tough win over Hidalgo.
Ungur made his intentions clear at the beginning of the contest, as he broke Ramirez Hidalgo in the very first game and held his following serve to attain a 2-0 lead. The Romanian contestant sustained his advantage till the end
to grab it 6-4.
The Italy resident banged in a couple of aces and 68 percent of the first serves, winning 13 of the 15 points on them. The 5ft 10in tall was error free on the second deliveries, as he converted all the seven of them into points.
Ramirez Hidalgo raised the level of his game in the second set, claiming four of the opening five games to race to a 4-1 advantage. Ungur broke back in the ninth to reduce the deficit to 4-5 but he lost his subsequent serve to
throw it away 4-6.
The Spaniard national gave a lacklustre performance on the second deliveries, as he lost 11 of the 17 points on them including a couple of double faults. The 34-year-old veteran compensated with the help of his first serves and
second returns, claiming 17 of the 20 and seven of the 12 points on them in the second set.
Ramirez Hidalgo and Ungur failed to hold their serve in the opening two games of the decider and equalised the score at 1-1. The Romanian participant went on a winning spree after that, as he grabbed four in a row to build a 5-1
lead. Ramirez Hidalgo held his serve in the eighth to cut the trail to 2-5 but he could not do anything more than that, losing 2-6.
