Adrian Ungur’s one-man show shatters Diego Sebastian in first round – Palermo Challenger 2011
4th October 2011 marked another disappointing end to a promising start of an Argentine teenager Diego Sebastian. The Argentine lost his 1st round match of the 2011 Palermo Challenger in straight sets to Adrian
Ungur of Romania. The match was totally one-sided and dominated by the Romanian international who won the match in one hour and 21 minutes winning 6-3 6-2.
Argentine international couldn’t settle in from the start and struggled to find his form throughout the match. He could not manage a single ace and was poor with serve points as well. Romanian easily knocked-off the Argentine and
moved to the 2nd round. Ungur won two points on aces and had a massive overall 57% winning point ratio.
Ungur who turned pro in 2003 saw ups and downs throughout his career until 2007. Eventually he managed to smoothen his ranking in 2009 and now owns a 123rd place in world’s ranking. Sebastian is a young teenager who
is yet to turn pro. He is ranked 363rd at the moment and has slipped almost 50 ranks since 2009. He had a promising start to the tournament but his dreams were shattered by Ungur.
Sebastian already came up with an upset in the last match so the hopes were high but Ungur didn’t panic for a second and grabbed the victory easily in straight sets. Ungur outplayed Sebastian in every area of the game. He struck
two fierce aces which dismantled the confidence of the youngster and Sebastian couldn’t revamp his composure to match the Ungur’s class.
The appreciation given to the youngster was fabulous. Crowd were expecting him to cause another upset and shock the world. He was full fired up at the start of the match but couldn’t handle the pressure in the midst of first set.
Sebastian started the second set with the same hope of turning things over but Ungur’s experience had the better of him and he came crashing down in the match.
However, the journey for the youngster doesn’t end here and he would definitely have better opportunities in the future. Ungur, on the other hand, is all set to make his mark as he moves into the next round of the event.
