Adriano de Souza, Peterson Crisanto and Jordy Smith prevail in Round 2 at Mr Price Pro Ballito
Brazil’s Adriano de Souza, his fellow countryperson Peterson Crisanto and South Africa’s Jordy Smith made their way through into the third round (No-Loser Round of 24) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito after claiming
top honours in their respective Round 2 (Round of 48) heats that went down at the Willard Beach in KwaDukuza, South Africa, on Thursday, July 5.
Hawaii’s Granger Larsen, Basque Country’s Hodei Collazo and Brazil’s Alex Ribeiro successfully made the Round 3 cut as well after securing runner-up position in their respective Round 2 heats.
With some of the best surfing talent from around the globe converging to South Africa for the latest ASP Prime event, the battles for top honours were expected to be nothing short of exciting. The local talent was showing a lot of promise as well, though
the seasoned-surfers enjoyed a bit of dominance.
The sixth heat saw De Souza, current No.4 at ASP World Title rankings, put on an impressive performance to get the better of his compatriot Jadson Andre, Hawaii’s Larsen and America’s Geiselman. Collecting a couple of good waves, he finished with a heat-total
of 12.17 points.
Larsen made the Round 3 cut as well after finishing with a two-wave total of 10.70 points. Andre and Geiselman finished in bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 6.97 and 5.13 points respectively.
The next heat saw former event champion Smith, current No.8 on the ASP World Title rankings, surfed superbly, collecting a number of eight-point rides to finish with a heat-total of 16.50 points.
Collazo finished with a heat-total of 12.17 points, whereas Australia’s Mitchel Coleborn and Brazil’s Willian Cardoso finished with a two-wave total of 12.00 and 9.34 points respectively.
The eighth heat of Round 2 saw Crisanto clinch a convincing victory over his rivals in a four-man battle. Reading the conditions nicely, the Brazilian surfer got hold of a couple of juicy rides to finish with a heat-total of 13.90 points, which held up until
the end to carry him through to victory.
Ribeiro finished in runner-up place with a heat-total of 11.94 points, consequently joining the Round 3 line-up. French Polynesia’s Alain Riou and Australia’s Yadin Nicol finished with a heat-total of 11.84 and 11.33 points respectively, which led to their
elimination from the competition.
