Adriano de Souza and Bede Durbidge move into Rip Curl Pro Portugal Semi-Finals – 2011 ASP World Tour
The ninth of the eleven stops on the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Rip Curl Pro Portugal, continued to treat the fans to a heavy dose of adrenaline-pumping action at the beach-break of Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal, on Tuesday,
October 18, with Brazil’s Adriano de Souza taking on Tahiti’s Michel Bourez in the third, whereas Australia’s Bede Durbidge took on his countryman, Joel Parkinson, in the fourth Quarter-Final.
The third Quarter-Final featured an epic showdown between De Souza and Bourez, with both the surfers fighting tooth and nail until the very last minute. The Brazilian eventually managed to prevail over Bourez and consequently advanced through into the Semi-Final.
Durbidge and Parkinson gave each other an extremely tough time during the fourth Quarter-Final, keeping everyone interested until the very end. As the battle concluded, it was Durbidge who stood victorious with his place in the Semi-Final confirmed.
As the third Quarter-Final kicked off in the high-performance three-to-five foot waves, Bourez immediately took the offensive approach and caught a wave to post a near-perfect 9.50 on the score-board. De Souza remained quite patient during the early stages
of the battle, taking his time to analyse the conditions and warming up to them. Once completely in sync with the waves, De Souza locked a juicy swell to pull off a string of spectacular stunts, earning a perfect 10 for the effort.
The Brazilian added another 7.60 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 17.60 points. Despite a good start, Bourez found himself on the back-foot in the final minutes of the battle. Failing to get an adequate score off his final wave, he finished
off with a heat-total of 17.53 points, consequently losing to his rival by a mere 0.07 points.
The 28-year-old Durbidge squared off with the formidable force, Parkinson, for the last remaining spot in the Semi-Finals. The determination was apparent in the performance of both the surfers as they sought to extend their life in the competition.
As the battle kicked off, Durbidge got off to a great start, earning 9.00 points off his first business-wave. However, Parkinson proved to be up for the challenge and responded with a 9.10-point wave, moving into the lead
Parkinson kept the charge going by earning 7.50 points off his second business-wave, moving to a heat-total of 16.60 points. His joy, however, was short-lived as Durbidge added an additional 8.10 to his account and moved ahead of his rival’s heat-total with
a heat-total of 17.10 points. The score turned served to seal the fate of the contest in his favour and sent him through into the Semi-Finals.
