Adriano de Souza and Joel Parkinson power into Round 4 of Rip Curl Pro Portugal – 2011 ASP World Tour
The third round of the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour event, Rip Curl Pro Portugal, continued to cut off heads at the renowned beach-break of Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal, as Brazil’s Adriano de Souza squared off with South
Africa’s Travis Logie in the ninth, while Australia’s Joel Parkinson took on Hawaii’s Dusty Payne in the tenth heat on Tuesday, October 18.
The ninth heat saw De Souza successfully extend his life in the competition by prevailing over Logie and advancing through into Round 4, bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.
Parkinson and Payne fought tooth and nail to get their hands on top honours during the tenth heat, but it was the Australian who eventually managed to emerge triumphant, consequently moving into Round 4 while eliminating the latter from the competition.
The clean three-to-five foot waves gracing the banks of Supertubos on Tuesday promised a series of exciting battles. The pressure of elimination was also expected to drive the surfers to put in an extra effort in order to remain in contention for the event
title.
The ninth heat saw the 24-year-old De Souza take on Logie in a battle for the Round 4 spot. While the start of the competition had been somewhat shaky for the Brazilian, he had bounced back strongly in Round 2 and was give his opponent a run for his money
in Round 3.
Logie got off to a stronger start than De Souza as the ninth heat of Round 3 commenced, getting 5.67 points off his first business waves in the early stages of the battle. Going through a series of mediocre scores, De Souza eventually grabbed the upper hand
by posting a 6.83 on the score-board.
The Brazilian continued to hold on to his lead as the heat progressed and added another 4.77 points in the dying minutes, consequently finishing with a heat-total f 11.60 points. Logie collected a mere 2.43 off his final wave and was forced to surrender
victory to his rival after finishing in a 3.50-point deficit.
The next heat featured an intense battle between Parkinson and Payne, with both of the surfers putting up a determined fight to get their hands on victory. The 30-year-old Australian wasted no time in making a charge and collected 6.83 points off his first
wave. Payne went through a series of waves before posting a 6.37 on the score-board to remain alive in the battle.
As the battle progressed, neither of the two surfers was able to find another score. In the final minutes, however, the Hawaiian managed to earn a 5.93 off his final wave and moved to a heat-total of 12.30 points. Parkinson did exceptionally well to rise
to the occasion and earned 6.73 points off his final wave to seal the fate of the heat in his favour. The victory sent him through to the next round, while removing Payne from the contention for the event title.
