Adriano de Souza and Kieren Perrow survive Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The sixth stop of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro New York, continued with the seventh and eighth heat of Round 2 on Wednesday, September 7, at Long Beach, New York.
The seventh heat saw Brazil’s Adriano de Souza come up with an outstanding performance to take down South Africa’s Travis Logie and make his way into the third round, eliminating his rival from the competition in the process.
Australia’s Kieren Perrow managed to walk away with top honours from the eighth heat after defeating America’s Cory Lopez to secure a place in the third round while bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.
The 24-year-old De Souza had not been in the best of his form during the last few weeks. Getting off to a shaky start at Quiksilver Pro, he found himself getting relegated to Round 2, where he was pitted against Logie.
As the battle between the Brazilian and his South African rival kicked off, De Souza took control of the heat early on by locking a wave to unleash a combination of impressive manoeuvres, posting 8.73 points on the scoreboard. A few minutes later, Logie
responded with a 6.70-point wave to ease a little bit of pressure that the Brazilian had placed him under with his first-wave score.
De Souza locked a juicy wave in the final minutes of the heat to pull off yet another sensational string of tricks, this time earning 9.20 points for the effort and moving to an intimidating heat-total of 17.93 points. With the victory pretty much out of
his reach, Logie collected 7.70 points off his second wave to finish with a heat-total of 14.40 points, allowing his rival to walk away with a comfortable win.
The eighth heat saw the 34-year-old Perrow take on Lopez in a battle for the coveted Round 3 spot. The Australian got off to a relatively stronger start, locking his first wave to collect 6.50 points off it. He caught another wave a few minutes later to
add an additional 6.67 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 13.17 points.
Lopez struggled to ride waves in the early stages of the heat, but eventually managed to score 5.87 points off a wave in the later stages. Adding another 6.63 points off his second business-wave, he finished the heat with a two-wave total of 12.50 points.
The 0.67-point deficit forced him to concede victory to Perrow, sending the Australian to the third round.
