Adriano de Souza downs Patrick Gudauskas in Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The non-stop surfing action continued at the Long Beach, New York, on Wednesday, September 7, with the second heat of Quiksilver Pro New York’s Round 3.
The heat saw Brazil’s Adriano de Souza clinch a convincing victory over America’s Patrick Gudauskas to make his way forward in the competition while removing his opponent from the competition.
The latest season of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour had started off ideally for the 24-year-old De Souza. Sitting at No.1 on ASP World Title Rankings at one time, the Brazilian had suddenly started to show a decline in his performance
and struggled to make a solid impact in the last couple of events.
The New York stop of the season had seen De Souza get off to a somewhat shaky start, but he had removed any doubts regarding his form after an outstanding performance in the relegation Round 2 to make his way into Round 3.
The 25-year-old Gudauskas had also seemed a little out of rhythm at the beginning of Quiksilver Pro New York, but had come up with a good performance in Round 2 to extend his life in the event. However, now he was pitted against the Brazilian force, a much
harder challenge than the one that he had faced in his previous heat.
As the Round 3 bout kicked off, Gudauskas locked the very first wave that came his way to open his account with 6.17 points. De Souza went through a series of waves before locking one to pull off a series of exquisite tricks, earning 8.00 points for the
effort.
The American surfer soon regained the lead by adding an additional 6.50 points to his account and moving to a heat-total of 12.67 points. In the dying minutes of the heat, the Brazilian caught a wave to earn 7.60 points off it, moving to a heat-total of
15.60 points and sealing the fate of the contest in his favour, making it his second victory of the day.
Commenting on his performance, the De Souza said, “I'm really happy with my performance today. My first heat was better for sure, I got the 9 and the 8, but I tried to get in rhythm in Round 3 and I hope I can keep going and get a good result in here. My
house is really similar to these waves in New York and I feel at home out in these conditions.”
The Brazilian looked extremely impressive during the two heats on Wednesday and seems to be building up a momentum that may very well carry him off to his second victory of the season and the No.1 spot on the ASP World Title Rankings.
However, it is still too early to say anything, especially with the likes of America’s Kelly Slater, Australia’s Taj Burrow and Mick Fanning and South Africa’s Jordy Smith in the line-up.
