Adriano de Souza prevails over Kai Otton in Round 3 heat at Volcom Fiji Pro – Surfing News
Brazil’s Adriano de Souza got the better of Australia’s Kai Otton in the 12th heat of Volcom Fiji Pro’s Round 3 that went down at the secondary event site of Restaurants in Tavarua, Fiji, on Saturday, June 9.
The victory in Round 3 served to carry De Souza into the fourth round, while removing his rival from the contention for the event title at the fourth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the alternate venue turned out to be nothing short of ideal. While the barrels on offer were not as massive as the ones being offered by the main venue of Cloudbreak, there was still enough juice on offer for the surfers
to dig deep in their bag of tricks and put out their most technical tricks and put their barrel-riding prowess on display. The four-to-six foot waves promised and pretty much delivered a heavy dose of memorable action as the world’s top surfing talent took
each other on to ensure their survival in the competition field.
The 12th heat of Round 3 pitted De Souza against Otton in a one-on-one battle for the Round 4 spot. The Brazilian powerhouse had been in a sweet form since the start of the season, where his opponent in the latest heat had been struggling with
his consistency. The scales tipped heavily in De Souza’s favour, though one could never be sure until the very end how the heat would end at this level.
As the battle got underway, De Souza immediately began to show-off his determination to settle for nothing less than a win. As energetic as ever, he went through a series of decent scores before locking his first business-wave to pull off a series of tricks,
earning a 7.83 for the effort. He kept navigating through the waves to seek another big score and eventually got awarded for his persistence through an 8.93-point ride in the dying minutes of the heat, which carried him to a heat-total of 16.76 points.
Otton showed just as much activity during the course of the heat as his rival, though the results did not exactly turn out to be the same for him. He only managed to score a 4.67 off his first business-wave and backed it up with a 6.20-point wave to finish
with a combined total of 10.87 points. The effort turned out to be inadequate and consequently led to his elimination from the competition.
