Adriano de Souza secures a place in Round 4 of Hurley Pro – 2011 ASP World Tour
Fans of surfing were not disappointed with the on-going action on the third day of Hurley Pro, which is the seventh of eleven stops on the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, as the second heat of Round 3 went down at Lower Trestles,
in California, America, on Tuesday, September 20.
The man-on-man battle saw Brazil’s Adriano de Souza down his countryman, Jadson Andre, to secure a place in Round 4, while bringing the competition to a pre-mature end for his rival.
The 24-year-old De Souza announced himself as a strong threat to the ASP World Title with a series of exceptional performances this season. Even the likes of America’s Kelly Slater were added to his list of victims as he collected good results in the initial
stages of the elite tour. However, he suddenly began to lose his rhythm as he made early exits from the competition. Things started to go wrong for him and even his luck seemed to have completely abandoned him.
Just when it seemed that De Souza would soon be pushed out of the top-ten contenders for the title, the Brazilian managed to show signs of returning form during the New York stop of the World Tour. He further confirmed these signs at Lower Trestles with
an impressive performance on first day of the competition. He now had a daunting task of defeating Andre in the third round to remain in contention for the event-title.
On the other hand, Andre had looked a little shabby during Round 1, but any doubts regarding his form were removed after watching him surf in Round 2. The young surfer seemed more than ready to take anyone on, in his pursuit for a good result.
As the second heat of Round 3 got underway, De Souza got-off to a blazing start and locked the very first juicy wave that came his way to earn 7.50 points off it. Catching another wave soon, he threw down a series of impressive manoeuvres to earn 8.00 points
for the effort and move to a heat-total of 15.50 points. His score remained unbeatable until the end and assured De Souza the win.
Talking to a reporter after the heat, De Souza admitted that victory was not completely satisfying. He said, “I’m sad to beat Jadson [Andre], he smashed it yesterday. He’s one of the best guys out there, but I need the result to improve my seed. I’m sad
for Jadson, but I’m also happy to make it through.”
The 21-year-old Andre had to carry out a long and patient hunt for a couple of good scores and only managed to earn 6.60 and 6.50 points for the effort in the later stages of the event. As a result, he was forced to embrace defeat and say goodbye to Hurley
pro.
