Adriano de Souza wins Round 4 to secure place in Quiksilver Pro Quarter-finals
Brazil’s Adriano de Souza clinched top honours in the first heat of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast’s Round 4 that went down at Snapper Rocks in Queensland, Australia, on Tuesday, February 28.
The success result enabled De Souza to advance through into the Quarter-finals. Australia’s Owen Wright was forced to settle for runner-up place, while his fellow countryman Josh Kerr rounded out the bottom position. Both the surfers consequently got relegated
to the fifth round to battle it out for a place in the Quarter-finals.
“I just tried to concentrate on my myself because Owen [Wright] is one of the form surfers of this event and Josh [Kerr] can also do some damage out there,” De Souza said. “I tried to catch the best waves and sometimes luck is on your side and it worked
out for me in that one. I’m stoked to skip Round 4 and move straight into the Quarter-finals.”
Returning to the iconic Snapper Rocks for the fourth consecutive day, the opening event of 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour continued to deliver a high-intensity action as the best surfers from around the globe put on spectacular
performances, driven by their desire to get their hands on the event title and a solid platform to chase the World Title.
The 25-year-old De Souza, who had been quite impressive during the elite tour last year, was up against the 22-year-old Wright, another 2011 ASP World Tour stand-out, as well as the formidable local force Kerr.
As the heat kicked off, the Brazilian surfer executed a string of exquisite manoeuvres on his first business-wave to post a 7.40 on the score-board. As the heat progressed, he continued to search for another opportunity to score big and eventually managed
to find a set that enabled him to add an additional 7.97 to his account, taking him to a heat-total of 15.37 points.
Wright’s performance clearly showed his determination to claim top honours and even managed to enjoy the lead for a while with his first-wave score of 7.83-point wave. However, he backed it up with a 7.30 to finish with a heat-total of 15.13 points, 0.24
points short of the required score.
The 27-year-old Kerr finished in third place with a heat-total of 9.00 points, which comprised of a 2.40 and 6.60-point wave.
The surfing action continued at Snapper Rocks on Tuesday with the remaining Round 4 heats of Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover.
