Adrien Toyon and Nat Young prevail in Round 2 of the Reef Hawaiian Pro
The first stop of the 2011 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the Reef Hawaiian Pro, continued to treat the crowd to a heavy dose of surfing action at the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, on Monday, November 21, as Reunion Island’s Adrien Toyon took on France’s Maxime Huscenot, Australia’s Brent Dorrington and America’s Dane Gudauskas in the third heat, whereas America’s Nat Young squared off with Hawaii’s Keanu Asing, his compatriot Dylan Goodale and Brazil’s Tomas Hermes in the fourth heat of the Round of 96 (Round 2).
The third heat saw Toyon edge past Huscenot in the final minutes of the four-man battle to clinch top honours and advance through into the Round of 64 (Round 3), leaving the latter to settle for runner-up place. This wasn’t a disappointing result for the Frenchman as he still qualified for the next round. Dorrington and Gudauskas rounded out the third and fourth places respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the competition.
Young comfortably secured victory in the fourth heat to confirm his place in Round 3. Hermes successfully extended his life in the competition as well after finishing in second place. Asing and Goodale took third and fourth positions respectively, getting ejected from the competition in the process.
With clean head-high waves on offer, the third heat of Reef Hawaiian Pro’s Round 2 got underway. The 22-year-old Toyon looked a bit shabby as the battle begun. Huscenot, on the other hand, got off to a decent start and posted a 5.00 on the score-board in the opening minutes, putting his rival under pressure.
As the heat progressed, the French added another 6.30 points to his account, taking his heat-total to 11.30 points. With hardly any time left at hand, Toyon began a desperate hunt for a couple of good scores and got his hands on a 6.07 and 6.60-point wave. The excellent last-minute effort got him ahead of Huscenot on the scoreboard, consequently carrying him off to victory.
Dorrington got off to a really strong start, getting a 6.67 off his first wave, but failed to follow it up with another good score and finished with a two-wave total of 10.57 points. Gudauskas shared a similar fate, scoring a 5.67 off a wave in the early minutes, but only managing to add another 4.73 points to his account to finish with a heat-total of 10.40 points. The failure to get an adequate score led to their ejection from the competition line-up.
The fourth heat turned out to be a one-man show as America’s 20-year-old Young stole the show with a couple of amazing waves. Earning 6.67 points off a wave early in the heat, he got himself in a dominant position. The addition of 8.17 points to his account pretty turned out to be the coup de grace and served to seal the fate of the contest in his favour.
Hermes successfully extended his life in the competition after scoring 5.67 points off his first business-wave, while adding another 6.20 points to his account near the end stages, finishing with a resultant heat-total of 11.87 points.
Asing finished in third place with a heat-total of 10.93 points, which comprised of a 4.93 and 6.00-point wave, while Goodale rounded out the bottom position after finishing with a heat-total of 5.54 points. The lacklustre performance by the two surfers resulted in their elimination from the competition.
