Adrien Toyon claims top honours in Round 1 heat at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime – Surfing News
Reunion Island’s Adrien Toyon confirmed his place in the second round (Round of 48) at the Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after claiming top honours in the 15th heat of Round 1 (Round of 96) that went down at the point-break
of Itauna Beach in Saquarema, Brazil, on Tuesday, May 22.
Australia’s Matt Wilkinson made his way through into the next round as well after securing runner-up place. His fellow countryperson Mitchel Coleborn finished third, while Brazil’s Luel Felipe rounded out the bottom-position. Both the surfers were consequently
eliminated from the contention for the event title.
The light winds and six-to-eight foot waves breaking at the primary event site on the opening day of the competition promised to deliver a heavy dose of exciting action throughout the day. 96 top surfing talent from around the globe had arrived at Rio de
Janeiro to try and grab the latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME event title, along with a slice of the $US 250,000 prize purse and coveted ASP ranking points that were on offer.
The 15th heat of Round 1 pitted Toyon against Wilkinson, Coleborn and Felipe in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.
As the surfer got underway, Toyon got off to a scratchy start, struggling to find his rhythm. The sea was not being too cooperative either, thus pushing the Reunion Island-based surfer to his limits. A stroke of luck in the final minutes of the heat sent
a couple of juicy waves in the direction of Toyon, which he utilised to post an 8.10 and 6.50 on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 14.60 points. The score held up until the end to seal the fate of the four-man bout in his favour.
Wilkinson finished in second place after scoring a 3.33 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a spectacular 9.00-point ride to finish with a heat-total of 12.33 points.
Coleborn collected a couple of scores in the five-point range to finish with a heat-total of 11.57 points, thus finishing in third place, while Felipe rounded out the bottom-position after finishing with a heat-total of 10.77 points, which included a 4.17
and 6.60-point wave. Both the surfers were consequently forced to step out of the race for the event title.
