  1. Hello,

(ANS) Your question is a little bit confusing, why? because there are x2 types of phone connections which provide access to the internet a) non cable i.e. BT here in the UK or plain old switched telephone systems and b) Cable based phone networks which tend to use optical fibre connections & come down a coaxiel cable into a digital box or set top box (such as Virgin Media or used to be NTL, or previously cable & wireless).

No.1 BT type connections with ADSL, >>>incoming phone line>>into wireless router or wireless router modem device. Wireless signal provides internet access to laptop or desktop within signal range but only to those who have secure access.

No.2 Cable set top box or cable digital box >>>>wireless modem router>>>wireless signal to computers in range (in the property). internet access is via wireless signal same as above.

ANS:- No!! you don't need to plug in anything else, you only need a wireless router which is either designed to work with cable i.e. cable compatible or compatible with plain old BT phone connections. DON'T confuse these they are very different & wont work with each other. The router or modem router must be compatible with your phone line or phone system.

    Kind Regards Ivan.

  2. Hiya,

It is possible to utilise the CABLE MODEM setup, and use the Wireless modem as an extension of the CABLE MODEM setup, all you need to do is make sure that the WIRELESS BROADBAND modem has additional lan connections in something along the line up below

LAN (0 or 1-Master or ), additional lan outputs normally labelled Lan Slave1 or lan1 or lan2, with additional Lan in/outputs number appropriately, the additional function you are interested in is the WIRELESS ability of the second modem.

The procedure to use is as follows

    CABLE                                                WIreless

    MODEM                                           Modem

    RJ45 (BLUE or

    GREY) WIRE -> LAN 0/Master socket |

                                     )                           (                       |

                                     )                          (     (   ---  Aerial

                           )         )                           (

    ---------|  )       )         )

    Wireless |     )          )

    Enabled  |                )

    Computer |              )

    -------------|

----------------------------  Make sure that the receiving computer / laptop has the original modem software installed - even though I used this set up without the driver for the WIRELESS Modem, I would recommend having it installed just in case there are problems.

Systems used to make this work on my network.

Motorola/AMBIT model ED8C013.00 -Virgin media software

Connecting with wireless modem via RJ45 Cat 5 cable to

Cheapest Gateway wireless modem available with LAN capabilities. This in turn ran on my HP Pavillion 1430 Media computer via lan & SAMSUNG R20 Laptop on a 2gb service.

I have had no problems with my set up, especially as the wireless modem was a rubbish tip recovered modem.

    Hope this helps,

    Alex
