Question:

Adult adoption of a new family?

I live in Australia and I vaguely remember reading a magazine article about a woman who had no family/was estranged from them, who was adopted by another family when she was an adult. She went on to set up a database online where you could search for a family to be adopted by (or something along those lines)

Does anyone know anything about this?

  3. G'Day Lisa,

Everyone should belong to a loving family if they want one.

Actually, any adult can be adopted by another adult if they both consent to it.  It's a simple process that can be completed by a family law attorney.  I'm in the USA, so I'm not sure if Australia has similar laws.  Sometimes it is done for inheritance purposes.  Sometimes adult adoptees do it to change their legal families.  Sometimes members of the g*y community use the laws to establish a legal connection to each other.  Sometimes, as you suggest, they just want a legal loving family of their own.  I've also heard of "adopting" grandparents, but I'm fairly certain that is done on an informal basis.

I hope your friend finds the perfect family for herself.  I'm also reminded of a saying "Friends are the family you choose for yourself."   Cheers,
