Adult literacy council?

I mentioned in 1979 I took a remedial reading course at a community college because I had

a learning disability and wanted to improve my skills. After I told the instructor I had LD I was told

to drop her class and I was wasting my time and hers and I will never be able to read good.

If I contcted the Adult Literacy council do you think

they would have talked to me that way?

  1. People had a much more negative view of learning disabilities back then.  And I don't think the Literacy Council would have spoken to you in that way.

The fact that your question was worded very well and that it made much more sense than alot of other questions on here, I think you have made remarkable progress and I congradulate you for wanting to become better than you are.

  3. Probably not but in 1979, adults who didn't know how to read and write was still pretty much a big secret. It's only been in the last 5years or so they actually have had tv shows about it which has brought some people to admit the problem and are learning in adult literacy programs that mostly take place in libraries across the country.

  4. No they wouldn't.  Adult illiteracy is a huge problem and there are a lot of agencies offering remedial reading classes.  A learning disability is not something of which to be ashamed; it is a barrier to work around or break down.  Good luck.

  5. No!! The reason being is not only because funding for literacy programs has been made available that was not available back in 1979 but Barbara Bush, while serving as first lady, highlighted the need for literacy programs. In fact she started the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.
