Many religious parents won't let their kids read stuff like Harry Potter, but instead have their children read a book that contains these verses. Why?
"Take your son, your only son – yes, Isaac, whom you love so much – and go to the land of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will point out to you." (Isaac was later spared by the Lord, before which his father had a knife to him and was fully ready to kill his own son...if someone did that today, they would be in jail right now.)
--Genesis 22:1-18
"Go and hide in the vineyards. When the women of Shiloh come out for their dances, rush out from the vineyards, and each of you can take one of them home to be your wife! And when their fathers and brothers come to us in protest, we will tell them, 'Please be understanding. Let them have your daughters, for we didn't find enough wives for them when we destroyed Jabesh-gilead." (This is a group of men, after killing and pillaging a city, that wanted more women to steal and rape and so hid in the vineyards to catch women for themselves! Last time I checked, women are people too, and you can't just force them into being your wife.)
--Judges 21:10-24 NLT
The bible is filled with passages that glorify slavery, rape, murder, pillaging and sacrificing both animals and humans. How could anyone be okay with telling their children that it's bad to read something innocent like Harry Potter, but turn around and hand them something that says things like this?
I'm just looking at this from a psychological standpoint-- what is going though your mind when you read a part of the Bible where there is glorified rape and murder, and think that it's a great book to teach a kid morals?
