My Brother-in-law is 42 yrs old and Autistic. He does not live with us, he lives with his mom, but we take care of both of them. He has almost never left the house and I was thinking about introducing him to a computer. What would be some good programs to start him out with? He is very smart, knows 2 languages and loves to read and color. Would like for him to have some stimulation at home.

  1. my brother has autism. He loves the internet, just show him google and say he can find out anything he wants.

My brother seems happy with that, he learns so much umbelievable stuff.

Also, if hes boyish try games like world of warcraft or age of empires, there actually fun.

Also if he adds  .fr (france) or .es (spanish) instead of .co.uk / .com he can go onto sites from those countries with usually difficult languages.

It's soo nice what tour doing.

  2. Your brother in law is 42 and may not be willing to accept a computer - it is change and very different in routine for him.  What makes you believe he needs "stimulation"?  One thing I suggest is that you talk with him, his therapists or his counselors before you introduce something to him that is new or may cause him confusion or discomfort or aggitation.

  3. I work with autistic adults, one guy is mad about football so he would go online to look at his team and print out stuff,he also loves music and would check out some music site, remember not to push and to do short sessions as they bore easily.

  4. i agree on the person above speak to him first and keep reminding him way before-hand that he is getting something new, show him the computer he is getting and show him more that once or twice. and don't just suprise him, it will cause a major upset to him and his routine and don't forget if u do decide to go against every one advise remember its your mum that has to deal with ur brother when you leave. trust me you don't want that to happen.

  5. My autistic daughter loves the paintbox on her computer and spends hours designing different backgrounds. She also loves maths so any games which involve numbers always keep her entertained. A lot of the maths games she uses are designed for older people and are aimed at keeping their minds agile. As she progresses through the levels they get harder and more challenging. The other good thing about these sort of programmes for computers is they are usually quite cheap to buy. Good luck.

  6. Freddy Fish is good, has a lot of color and easy graphics. Fun, too.

  7. I think it's a great idea.  Start with what he has a passion for...and most people who have autism have a few key interests...and find web sites for him to explore.  He could probably benefit from a tutorial to introduce him to the computer.  Maybe you could go through it with him to get him started.  Once he knows how it's done, I'm sure he'll catch on.

Also, if he likes music, maybe show him how to access videos on U Tube.
